Sibelius Academy

The Sibelius Academy Degree Programme in Folk Music provides students with a comprehensive, practical mastery of historical as well as contemporary folk music playing and singing, and introduces them to research in folk music. Upon completion of the degree programme, the students will be prepared for the demanding tasks of folk music pedagogue, instructor and musician, as well as for a variety of other positions that require special expertise in folk music. In addition, students attain the skills necessary for further studies.

The Department releases several recordings each year, produces teaching material and multimedia works. The Sibelius Academy also organises concerts and club nights where the students of the Department get to perform. Graduates of the Department will most often work as musicians or teachers, as well as being employed by theatrical music productions or in cross art form performances.

The 25-year long history of the Department of Folk Music has resulted in the awarding of over 80 Masters, two Licentiates and six Doctorates of Music
